Can I Apply a New Coating Over an Old One?
Yes – but only if it’s done right.
If you’re managing a commercial property or preparing a resin flooring project in South Florida, recoating over an existing system can be a smart move. When executed correctly, it can save time, reduce downtime, and lower overall project costs. But recoating is not a shortcut – and when it’s rushed or done without proper preparation, it often leads to premature failure.
The truth is simple: a new coating is only as strong as the surface beneath it.
At Chromology Florida East Inc. (10408 W State Rd 84, Davie, FL), we work closely with contractors and property professionals to ensure recoats are done the right way – using proven preparation methods, compatible resin systems, and real-world jobsite guidance.
Why Recoating Can Work – and When It Won’t
Applying a new epoxy, polyurea, or polyaspartic coating over an existing one is possible only if the original coating is structurally sound. If the existing surface is well bonded, crack-free, and free of contamination, a recoat may perform just as well as a full removal.
However, if the old coating is peeling, brittle, delaminating, or chemically compromised, recoating will simply trap the problem – and the failure will return, often faster and more aggressively.
That’s why surface evaluation and prep are non-negotiable.
